ABBA: The Definitive Collection

Rusty W. Spell -- This collection is great for so many reasons. Most importantly, every ABBA "video" (or "promo clip," since these were pre-MTV days) ever made is included here (35 total), and all of these clips are interesting for one reason or another. If you ever wanted an ABBA greatest hits collection, this serves perfectly well; just put it on in the background and don't watch the screen. The music sounds better here than on most regular CD releases anyway, since the DVD has been remastered in 24 bit. There's even a pretty detailed booklet. If you like ABBA at all, you need this.

Apocalypse Now: Redux

Tommy Burton – There's quite a bit of revisionism going on in the world of entertainment. Whether it's George Lucas adding even more footage to his original Star Wars movies or Paul McCartney reversing the Lennon/McCartney credit that so long carried Beatles compositions, one has to be a bit skeptical when a "new" version of a classic film is released. In the case of Apocalypse Now on DVD, it was needed. The original DVD release of the film looks pretty bad. This new version is all cleaned up and sounds great. But what about the new stuff? Well, I can't say that tampering with a classic makes it any better, but the new scenes that were added do make the film a bit more cohesive. The French plantation scene may run a bit long for my tastes, but it's not overly long. My only real complaint is that I wish you had the option to view the original film or the new version. I suppose that will be seen in a later even more special edition. That edition should also contain the wonderful documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse, a great film in its own right. As far as extras are concerned, there aren't any worth mentioning; it's just the movie, but the movie is enough.
